Original score and spatial sound design for an interactive planetarium adventure.
Frost Planetarium · May 2026

SCORING A COSMIC ADVENTURE
How to Die in Space is a live, audience-driven adventure through cosmic hazards at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science. Developed by Frost Science Studios and inspired by Dr. Paul M. Sutter’s book, the production combines science, humor, and choices that shape the mission’s fate.
I created the original score and spatial sound design through a collaboration with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, with musical guidance from Susan Green and Tom Collins.
SOUND THROUGHOUT THE DOME
The planetarium’s 12 dome speakers and four subwoofers create an immersive listening environment. My REAPER workflow uses ambisonic encoding and automated source positions to shape movement around the audience. The process screenshots show azimuth and elevation automation alongside IEM tools for encoding and visualizing the sound field.
LISTEN / SOUND-EFFECT EXAMPLE
A 15-second stereo sound-effect example from the project. This excerpt presents the sound design; it does not reproduce the full dome playback experience.
Frost Science currently lists the production as How to Survive in Space.

BandSimLIVE
A virtual drum kit that turns controller movement into musical performance.

I developed a controller-based VR drumming prototype that connects Meta Quest 3 interactions to Ableton Live. C# scripts use DryWetMIDI to map drum collisions and strike velocities to MIDI notes and dynamics, with Ableton providing the drum sounds.
- Quest controllers
- Unity + C#
- Virtual MIDI port
- Ableton Live
Interaction & sound
I built the virtual kit from Unity primitives and used the Corvaire Kit instrument in Ableton. Drum panning follows the player’s seated perspective.
Prototype scope
The current experience supports a single player using controllers. Multiplayer, controller-free hand tracking, and haptic interaction are future development goals.

Applying generative machine learning to musical variation through model training, inference, and output review.

The project
Our team used VarGen, an existing theme-and-variation generator, to explore a progressive metal interpretation of “Silent Night.” After training the model on 185 metal guitar parts, the team generated 20 variations that informed the song’s melodic and rhythmic material.
- Metal guitar training material
- VarGen variations
- MIDI review & arrangement
- Live recording
- Final production
My contribution
I worked extensively on training the VarGen model and running inference, collaborating with Mike and Tom to generate variations from the “Silent Night” theme. I also contributed to production, connecting the model’s MIDI outputs with arrangement decisions and live recording.
Model training
I contributed to training VarGen on a collection of 185 metal guitar parts, applying an existing generative model to the musical vocabulary of progressive metal.
Inference & generated outputs
I worked with the team to run inference using “Silent Night” as the input theme, generating 20 variations that supplied melodic and rhythmic material for the project.
Output review & evaluation
The team reviewed generated MIDI for musical usefulness and playability. The process document also describes an originality-checking method comparing generated variations with the training collection.
Application in production
Selected model outputs became the foundation for a through-composed recording. I contributed to guitar and bass recording sessions and collaborative lyric writing as the generated material was adapted into the final song.
Process & model reference
The process document records our creative workflow and collaboration. The accompanying research paper is a reference for the existing VarGen model used in the project.
From a spatial sound scene to individual audio objects and their spatial metadata.
What I’m working on
I’m currently working on extracting individual audio objects from ambisonic sound scenes, along with audio and spatial metadata. The goal is to connect the extracted sounds with information about their position within the scene.
sound scene→Audio object
extraction→Audio objects +
spatial metadata
Current focus
Audio object extraction and the relationship between the extracted audio and its spatial information. The implementation approach is still in development.
Next steps
The next stage is to develop and evaluate the extraction workflow, then document results with example scenes and visualizations of the spatial metadata.
Reimagining drum editing through machine learning for transient detection.

The concept
Manual drum editing involves locating transients, slicing clips, and aligning performances across multiple tracks. Aligno is being developed to detect drum onsets with convolutional neural networks and support a simpler multitrack editing workflow for recording engineers and producers.
Funding & recognition
Aligno received a $10,000 Venture Catalyst Award through the University of Miami’s USTAAR program to support model training and continued development.
My role
Co-founder & Data and Tools Engineer, contributing to training data, model development, and evaluation.
Multitrack drum datasets
I built multitrack drum datasets to improve onset detection with convolutional neural networks and curated training data for ML audio development.
CNN development in PyTorch
I contributed to convolutional neural network model development using PyTorch, connecting audio datasets with the onset-detection training workflow.
Output evaluation
I evaluated model outputs to guide improvements to the training data and optimize ML audio performance.
Current progress
The project is in active development. Current work focuses on datasets, CNN development, and output evaluation; the pitch outlines the broader vision for automated drum editing.
Project direction
The planned workflow moves from importing multitrack drums to detecting transients, supporting slicing and alignment, and exporting edited audio. Further model evaluation and editing-workflow integration remain development goals.
TS-style overdrive in your DAW, developed from the TubeScreamer Digital Model.

Overdrive & tone shaping
Developed with MATLAB Audio Toolbox, ScreamerTube combines digital filtering and soft clipping with Drive, Tone, and Level controls. The plugin supports mono and stereo processing.
Switchable anti-aliasing
An antiderivative anti-aliasing (ADAA) option is designed to reduce aliasing from the nonlinear clipping stage. Toggle it directly from the plugin interface.
Technical foundation
The accompanying TS808 technical report documents the original MATLAB model, including circuit decomposition, digital filter derivation, soft clipping, and response analysis. ScreamerTube extends that work into an audio plugin with switchable ADAA.
macOS downloads

Neural speech denoising with hands-on control over noise reduction and gate timing.

I trained the bundled denoising weights using MathWorks' example-based workflow and developed a MATLAB audio plugin around the models. SpeechDenoiser combines selectable fully connected (FF) and convolutional (CNN) networks with a voice-activity-driven noise gate, dry/wet blending, and bypass.
Model & denoise controls
Switch between FF and CNN models and adjust denoise strength to blend the denoised signal with the gated audio. Bypass returns the original audio with the same processing delay.
Gate timing
Attack, Hold, and Release controls shape the voice-activity-driven gate, balancing noise suppression with the continuity of speech.
Development scope
The project adapts MathWorks' deep-learning speech-denoising example into a continuous mono audio-processing interface. The current implementation uses an 80 ms fixed processing latency and 8 kHz model inference, with approximately 4 kHz denoised output bandwidth. Native plugin export and microphone operation remain unverified.

Filters & nonlinear processing
The MATLAB model converts continuous-time subsystem transfer functions into digital filters using the bilinear transform at 48 kHz. A drive-dependent hyperbolic tangent function approximates soft clipping between the linear filtering stages.
Response analysis
Frequency responses, impulse responses, and pole-zero plots characterize the linear cascade across control settings. The technical report documents the circuit decomposition, implementation, and model limitations.

Perception-Based Analysis of Spatial Semantic Separation of Sound Scenes (S5)
I’m working on a research paper studying perception-based analysis of spatial semantic separation of sound scenes (S5). The research uses a MUSHRA listener study to evaluate the separated sound scenes through listener judgments.
Research focus
Understanding how listeners perceive the results of spatial semantic separation of sound scenes.
Listener study
A MUSHRA listening study forms the perceptual evaluation component of this research. The paper is currently in progress.
JSmasklab: An Interactive Experiment for Measuring Auditory Frequency Masking
Design and implementation of a browser-based auditory masking experiment, with two-interval forced-choice adaptive trials, baseline and masked thresholds, and frequency masking curves.
A browser-based listening experiment exploring how one sound changes your ability to hear another.

I developed JSmasklab to explore frequency masking through an interactive listening experiment. Listeners compare two sound intervals and identify the one containing a pure-tone probe. Their responses adjust the probe level to estimate detection thresholds across frequencies, connecting personal listening results to masking curves and auditory frequency selectivity.
Adaptive listening trials
A narrow-band noise masker accompanies the probe in a two-interval task. Two correct responses lower the probe level; one incorrect response raises it. The test ends after eight reversals and estimates the threshold from the final six.
Results & session data
Baseline measurements provide a comparison for masked thresholds at the same frequencies. Results display thresholds and masking amount, with sessions saved in the browser and CSV summaries or full JSON data available for export.
Experiment scope
The app explores masking, critical bands, and asymmetry of masking using synthesized audio. Levels are digital dBFS RMS, without calibration to dB SPL or clinical hearing thresholds. Use headphones in a quiet room and keep a low, comfortable device volume unchanged throughout a session.
A browser-based exploration of ear transmission and the cues behind binaural hearing.

I developed an interactive web-based auditory model to explore outer-ear response, middle-ear transmission, and synthetic binaural rendering. Adjustable anatomy and circuit parameters connect the underlying models to response plots and audio playback.
Ear transmission
The middle-ear model uses an equivalent circuit to calculate input impedance and transmission magnitude and phase. The Combined view cascades the outer- and middle-ear frequency responses, with experiments exploring inertance, compliance, and loss.
Synthetic binaural audio
Source azimuth and elevation shape left and right HRTFs. The model derives HRIRs for binaural convolution, displaying interaural time and level differences alongside the response plots.
Listen / binaural example
A six-second stereo render using a source azimuth of −75° and elevation of 46°. Listen with headphones to hear the left/right spatial cues.
Model scope
The binaural responses are synthetic, not measured or personalized HRTFs. The outer-to-middle-ear connection is a unilateral LTI cascade without loading feedback. These simplified models support exploration rather than individualized anatomical prediction.
An Interactive Web-Based Auditory Model: Middle-Ear Transmission and Synthetic Binaural Responses
Equivalent-circuit modeling, outer-to-middle-ear transmission, parameter experiments, and synthetic binaural responses. The report documents the implementation, results, and simplifying assumptions behind the interactive model.
